Upanishads


A part of the Vedas, are ancient Sanskrit texts


that contain some of the central philosophical concepts and ideas of Hinduism




The important ones whose texts have been found are about 251 in number though in print there are 108 of them. Adi Shankaracharya has chosen to comment on just 10 of them and has quoted from about 16 of these Upanishads in his works on the Brahma Sutras

What are Vedas and Upanishads?

The Samhitas are the most ancient part of the Vedas, consisting of hymns of praise to God. The Brahmanas are rituals and prayers to guide the priests in their duties. The Aranyakas concern worship and meditation. The Upanishads consist of the mystical and philosophical teachings of Hinduism.
